HA2 Task 2 – Game Evaluation

Task 2 – Mekka Hornet evaluation

Genre – The main genre of the Mekka Hornet game was a top down shooter, it also included sub genres such as Retro (due to the style of the game), Action (as it involved a lot of explosions and shooting) and sci-fi (as the characters and enemies had a mechanical design to them).

Gut reaction – My reaction towards Mekka Hornet is that it was a challenging game. When I first played it I found it quite difficult and died very often. I guess this was because I was not use to many factors of the game such as how the enemies controlled, how the character itself controlled, how the enemies attacked my characters, what power ups were and what they would to (would they help to attack my character or would they help me) etc. As I continued to play I got use to the game finding it very challenging but fun. It was quite limited to what it offered but kept me entertained for the amount of things it had. The limitations however, made the game only replayable for a while as you could only do a limited amount of challenges before getting bored. The art style was original and but again quite limited with every enemy being the same colour.
As an overall reaction I found the game fun and challenging for what it offered but very limited to what could have been included.

Content – Its content was quite rich in how it was portrayed, the sounds of the game matched perfectly to the type of game it was, the characters and other aspects. The music was fun to listen to and again matched the pace of the game, the visuals were nice and original but quite bland and dreary for me to like too much. When loading up the game I found the fonts to be nice and stylized with the title of the game being done to match and show people what type of game they are in for, also making it original and easy to read. The instructions were done with an easy and readable font which helps and avoids straining the eyes to read.

Construction – I found the mechanics of the game to present a hard difficulty towards the game. Even though it felt quite lagged when moving the character it presented a strategy that the player had to learn, getting used to moving earlier than what he usually would. The movement would correspond alongside with the animations of flying making the gameplay look a bit more real. I also like the mechanics of the enemies, each different enemy has certain attacks to fulfil and even surprise me when it comes to fighting them. Where usual games have enemies with only one attack the player is presented straight away with an enemy who both shoots and then suicides towards the player in an attempt to kill him bringing challenge and catching the first time players off guard. To me the game was challenging but engaging enough to keep me playing it, I wanted to beat the game and try creating my own challenges when playing to keep it more entertaining.

Target audience – In my view I believe this game would be aimed towards people around 15-22 due to the difficulty of the game. If a child tried it then it might be a little too hard to play for them. I also think that it is aimed at people who like action and top down shooters since it uses both of those genres to create the game. One last genre could be sci-fi as the sprites involved looked quite mechanical.
